# METADATA Data Description:
#
# ABSTRACT:
# The report authors maintained notes detailing the process that
# was used to do the analysis for this report. The pertinent
# notes were included in the appendix of the report.
# Some details that did not warrant publication reside
# in these notes. These notes are being archived in the
# event that they might be of use to future water-use
# efforts aimed at stream-valley aquifers.

MONTANA DOCUMENTATION
Last Edit date: February 7, 2006 PM

The Montana Department of Natural Resources and Conservation is the source for most of the water use data collected for Montana for the 2000 compilation. Public supply information was obtained from the Safe Drinking Water Information System database maintained by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. Irrigation data were compiled from the U.S. Department of Agriculture, National Agricultural Statistics Service and the Montana Department of Agriculture, Montana Agricultural Statistics Service.
In 2000 total alluvial aquifer category withdrawals in Montana for the three categories were 33.6 Mgal/d. The majority of the withdrawals were for irrigation (21.7 Mgal/d) followed by public supply (11.1 Mgal/d) and finally self-supplied industrial (0.77 Mgal/d). Alluvial aquifer withdrawals accounted for 20 percent of total withdrawals from all aquifers in Montana.
In Montana, a line delineating the southern extent of Quaternary continental glaciation runs along the northern third of the State. Unconsolidated coarse-grained deposits exist in the glaciated part of the state. For the 2000 water use compilation ground water withdrawals for Glacial sand and gravel aquifers totaled 33.9 Mgal/d for the three categories. Unconsolidated deposits are also found in the Northern Rocky Mountains Intermontane Basins aquifer systems which had withdrawals of 92.7 Mgal/d for the three categories. No ground-water withdrawals were assigned to the Other aquifer category for the 2000 compilation.
Sixteen out of 57 counties in Montana are located far enough away from the glaciated area and the Northern Rocky Mountains Intermontane basin aquifer systems to contain potentially identifiable with existing data stream-valley aquifer withdrawals. The 16 counties are: Big Horn, Carbon, Carter, Custer, Fallon, Golden Valley, Judith Basin, Musselshell, Powder River, Prairie, Rosebud, Stillwater, Sweet Grass, Treasure, Wheatland, and Yellowstone. All but 6 of these counties contain either unconsolidated deposits not associated with a river system or possible multiple stream-valley aquifer units so that stream-valley aquifer disaggregation with county data is difficult. The six counties where disaggregation was possible are: Carter, Fallon, Prairie, Rosebud, Sweet Grass, and Treasure.
Twenty-two percent of the total withdrawals from alluvial aquifers (33.6 Mgal/d) occur in two stream-valley aquifer units. The two units are: the Yellowstone stream-valley aquifer and the Little Missouri stream-valley aquifer. The Yellowstone stream-valley aquifer had total withdrawals of 6.84 Mgal/d, whereas the Little Missouri stream-valley aquifer had total withdrawals of (0.40 Mgal/d). The amount of withdrawals from alluvial aquifers not disaggregated was 26.4 Mgal/d.
